The Fifth on Long Bridge

They privately called the band Long Bridge.

Whitebriar Port. Grey Bell. Saltline. Sunken Reef.

Four callsigns had been hanging there for a long time.

Whitebriar Port had refused Grey Bell supplies twice.

Saltline had once raised Sunken Reef’s freight rate fourfold. Sunken Reef paid it, then hired Saltline again on the next run.

One of Sunken Reef’s fleets had also spent thirteen flight legs above Whitebriar Port, carrying six Attack Orcas.

Whitebriar Port did not ask.

Long Bridge did not go quiet because of it.

They talked prices there.

Routes.

Who owed whom a shipment of Matter.

Sometimes, they talked about which world was best reached at the same Aion.

That time, it was Helmen.

Whitebriar Port gave its route first.

“My arrival Aion can fall between LXVIII·418726388.4 and .7.”

Grey Bell answered quickly.

“.5 to .8.”

Saltline:

“.6 to .9.”

Sunken Reef gave nothing.

Whitebriar Port asked:

“You?”

“Staying outside.”

“Sure?”

“Sure.”

Grey Bell ran the numbers again.

“The only overlap for all three of us is .6 to .7.”

Whitebriar Port said:

“Enough.”

Saltline asked:

“Set .6?”

“Don’t press the edge.”

“Then .7.”

Whitebriar Port sent the final coordination.

ARRIVAL AION
LXVIII·418726388.7

Whitebriar Port.

Grey Bell.

Saltline.

Three main forces.

Sunken Reef would remain outside Helmen.

Grey Bell replied:

“Received.”

Saltline:

“Received.”

Sunken Reef was last.

“Received.”

AION:LXVIII·418726384.9017.

The next spectrum update reached Grey Bell.

Validation failed.

Grey Bell fetched it again.

Same result.

Validated again.

Failed.

It checked its local chain.

Last valid head:

7A91:02D4

Recomputed.

Still:

7A91:02D4

But the new spectrum referenced something else.

C84F:11A9

Grey Bell asked:

“Long Bridge head?”

Whitebriar Port replied:

C84F:11A9

Saltline:

C84F:11A9

Sunken Reef replied last.

C84F:11A9

Grey Bell said:

“Mine stops at 7A91.”

Whitebriar Port:

“Spectrum?”

“Won’t validate.”

Sunken Reef asked:

“You don’t have automatic membership-chain updates on?”

“No.”

Saltline:

“You still advance the chain manually?”

“Always.”

Sunken Reef said:

“Then Long Bridge changed heads.”

Grey Bell looked at C84F:11A9.

“How many times?”

“Don’t know.”

“Send me the raw records I haven’t chained yet.”

Whitebriar Port sent the data between the two heads.

There were only two records.

Grey Bell validated the first.

Predecessor correct.

Signature valid.

It stopped.

Whitebriar Port asked:

“Connected?”

“First one.”

“Then keep going.”

“Wait.”

Grey Bell opened the record.

Long Bridge went silent.

Saltline asked first:

“Who?”

No one answered.

Grey Bell validated the second record.

Grey Bell added both records to its chain in order.

Its new local head became:

C84F:11A9

It validated the spectrum again.

Passed.

Grey Bell said:

“Connected.”

Whitebriar Port asked:

“Who is VANTA 43?”

Grey Bell:

“No record.”

Saltline:

“None here either.”

Sunken Reef said nothing.

Whitebriar Port asked:

“Sunken Reef?”

“Seen it.”

“Where?”

“Battle report.”

“Which side?”

“Helmen.”

Grey Bell said:

“.3181 in.”

Saltline:

“.8462 out.”

Whitebriar Port:

“What did we send in between?”

Grey Bell started going back through the records.

First.

Saltline’s supply mass.

Second.

Whitebriar Port correcting its route.

Third.

Grey Bell asking whether Sunken Reef would enter.

The fourth stopped at:

.6729

Grey Bell did not continue.

Whitebriar Port asked:

“What?”

Grey Bell sent the transmission back across Long Bridge.

ARRIVAL AION

Simultaneous arrival at Helmen.

Whitebriar Port:

“No need.”

“Validate.”

Grey Bell did.

Signature valid.

Recipient record valid.

Predecessor chain complete.

VANTA 43 joined at .3181.

At .6729, the arrival Aion was sent.

It was still on the band.

Whitebriar Port said:

“So it heard it.”

Grey Bell:

“Yes.”

No one used the word maybe again.

Saltline said:

“Change .7.”

Whitebriar Port:

“Can’t. I’ve already departed.”

Long Bridge went quiet for a moment.

Grey Bell asked:

“When?”

Whitebriar Port opened its own record.

Saltline said:

“So have I.”

Grey Bell said nothing.

Sunken Reef asked:

“When did VANTA leave?”

No one answered immediately.

Grey Bell looked back.

.8462.

Then it looked again at Whitebriar Port and Saltline’s departure values.

.7382.

.7546.

.8462.

Whitebriar Port said:

“It didn’t leave after hearing .7.”

Saltline:

“No.”

“It stayed.”

“Yes.”

Grey Bell asked:

“Waiting for what?”

This time Sunken Reef answered.

“For you to leave.”

No one spoke.

Whitebriar Port reordered the records by Aion.

VANTA 43 LEAVE

Grey Bell finished reading.

“It wasn’t here to hear the time.”

Whitebriar Port:

“No.”

“What was it here for?”

“Verification.”

Saltline asked:

“Verify what?”

Whitebriar Port looked at the two departure records.

“That we couldn’t change it anymore.”

Sunken Reef said:

“I can fill the third force.”

Grey Bell answered immediately:

“No.”

“Why?”

“You know VANTA.”

“I’ve seen it.”

“Doesn’t matter now.”

Sunken Reef did not argue again.

Private messages can say anything.

That is all they can do.

Someone could privately tell VANTA:

We will reach Helmen at .7.

They could add:

Two fleets have already departed.

VANTA could believe it.

Or not.

A private message proves nothing by itself.

No chain head.

No shared recipient list.

No record the others can independently reconcile.

If all someone wanted was to give VANTA .7, there was no reason to let it onto Long Bridge.

Sunken Reef said:

“Someone gave it more than .7.”

Grey Bell:

“The key.”

“Yes.”

Whitebriar Port:

“So it could come in and see for itself.”

Saltline:

“See us set the time.”

Grey Bell:

“Then see you depart.”

Sunken Reef said:

“And only then did it leave.”

Long Bridge went quiet again.

This time, why the stranger had come in was worse than how.

Whitebriar Port asked:

“Who gave it the key?”

No answer.

The chain could prove VANTA 43 had joined.

It could prove the player_id had not been spoofed.

It could prove VANTA received .7.

It could prove that while VANTA was still on the band, Whitebriar Port and Saltline had already departed.

It could prove VANTA left at .8462.

The key was not on the chain.

It could be sent privately.

Copied.

Forwarded.

No signature would ever appear beside the key saying:

who gave me this.

Grey Bell said:

“New band.”

Whitebriar Port:

“Agreed.”

Saltline asked:

“Who gets it?”

No one answered immediately.

Whitebriar Port generated a new band key.

It sent it privately to Grey Bell first.

Grey Bell joined.

Then Saltline.

Saltline joined.

The new band held only three callsigns.

Whitebriar Port.

Grey Bell.

Saltline.

Sunken Reef remained on Long Bridge.

Whitebriar Port did not leave either.

After a while, Sunken Reef asked:

“Nothing for me?”

“No.”

“Because I’ve seen VANTA?”

“Not only that.”

“What else?”

“I don’t know whether you’re the one who gave it access to Long Bridge.”

Sunken Reef did not answer for a long time.

Finally:

“Reasonable.”

Whitebriar Port looked at the reply.

“You’re not going to explain?”

“What do you want me to prove?”

“That you have nothing to do with VANTA.”

“Can’t prove that.”

“You can say it.”

“That isn’t proof.”

Whitebriar Port asked nothing else.

On the new band, Grey Bell was watching Helmen.

“Overall energy radiation is rising.”

Saltline:

“How much?”

Grey Bell gave the reading.

Not long after, another reading came in.

Higher.

Saltline said:

“Still rising.”

Whitebriar Port:

“Yes.”

“They’re reinforcing.”

“All we know is that Helmen is getting brighter.”

“You think it isn’t reinforcements?”

“I don’t know.”

Another observation update.

Helmen’s overall energy radiation rose again.

Grey Bell said:

“They know.”

Saltline:

“VANTA.”

“Don’t know.”

“It heard us on Long Bridge and stayed until you departed.”

“Yes.”

“And you still don’t know?”

“VANTA wasn’t the only one who knew .7.”

Saltline did not reply.

Whitebriar Port said:

“There were five.”

Four had already been on Long Bridge.

The fifth was VANTA.

Whitebriar Port switched back to the old band.

Sunken Reef was still there.

“Helmen is brighter.”

“I saw.”

“You think VANTA gave them the information?”

“Maybe.”

“Only maybe?”

“The chain proves it saw it.”

“It also proves it waited until we departed.”

“Yes.”

“And that still isn’t enough?”

“Not enough to prove it passed anything on.”

Whitebriar Port paused.

“Doesn’t prove you didn’t either.”

“No.”

Sunken Reef added:

“Doesn’t prove you didn’t.”

Whitebriar Port laughed once.

Only once.

After a while, it said:

“At least VANTA had reason to believe .7.”

“Because it verified it firsthand.”

“Yes.”

Sunken Reef said:

“Maybe that’s exactly why someone let it in.”

Whitebriar Port said nothing.

“What if one of the original four gave .7 to Helmen?”

“Then what is VANTA?”

“A better-looking answer.”

“Let it in. Make sure everyone can see afterward that it was here.”

“Yes.”

“Including you?”

Sunken Reef said:

“Including me.”

Whitebriar Port trusted it no more than before.

By .9421, Grey Bell still had not departed.

Its latest possible arrival Aion had already slipped into the next range.

It could no longer catch Whitebriar Port and Saltline.

On the new band, Saltline said:

“Don’t come.”

Grey Bell:

“Just the two of you?”

Whitebriar Port:

“Already on the way.”

Grey Bell asked:

“Sunken Reef?”

No one knew.

Whitebriar Port returned to Long Bridge.

“You still where you were?”

No answer.

“Sunken Reef.”

After a while:

“No.”

“Where?”

“Helmen.”

Whitebriar Port looked at the reply.

“Yours?”

Sunken Reef replied:

“.8.”

Almost the same time as theirs.

“Which side?”

No answer.

Whitebriar Port brought the message back to the new band.

“Sunken Reef is going to Helmen.”

Grey Bell:

“I knew it.”

Saltline:

“Didn’t it say it was staying outside?”

“Yes.”

Grey Bell:

“Treat it as hostile.”

Whitebriar Port:

“That’s a judgment.”

“Yes.”

“Not proof.”

“I know.”

Whitebriar Port looked at its route once.

There were no editable fields.

Helmen brightened once more before .7.

Whitebriar Port stopped guessing what it meant.

There was nothing left in its route that could be changed.

The fighting lasted longer than expected.

After the first round, Saltline started losing ships.

The round after that, Whitebriar Port did too.

Helmen did not darken as quickly as the calculations had predicted.

It dimmed slowly.

Too slowly.

When Whitebriar Port withdrew, Saltline was still there.

One round later, Saltline left too.

Helmen was not taken.

The new band stayed quiet for a while.

Grey Bell spoke first.

“The battle report is in.”

Whitebriar Port did not answer.

“You should look at it.”

Whitebriar Port opened the record.

Whitebriar Port continued down.

DEFENSE

CARGO WHALE: 3

Next line.

Sunken Reef

ATTACK ORCA: 6 → 5
DEFENSE PUFFERFISH: 2
CARGO WHALE: 1

Whitebriar Port stopped.

Saltline asked:

“See it?”

“I see it.”

Grey Bell said:

“It was on the defending side.”

No one answered.

Whitebriar Port opened Sunken Reef’s record.

It appeared in only two rounds.

First:

Sunken Reef

ATTACK ORCA: 6
DEFENSE PUFFERFISH: 2
CARGO WHALE: 1

Next round:

Sunken Reef

ATTACK ORCA: 5
DEFENSE PUFFERFISH: 2
CARGO WHALE: 1

The round after that:

Sunken Reef: —

Below it, the same report carried one more line.

WITHDRAWN: Sunken Reef

Saltline said:

“It withdrew on its own.”

Whitebriar Port:

“Yes.”

“Still had eight ships.”

“Yes.”

Grey Bell said:

“It went to Helmen.”

“Yes.”

“Joined the defending side.”

“Yes.”

“And lost an Attack Orca there.”

“Yes.”

“What else do you need?”

Whitebriar Port looked at the two rounds.

“Why it went.”

Grey Bell did not answer.

Whitebriar Port still had Helmen under coverage.

In the final observation, the world’s overall energy radiation was far below what it had been before the battle.

That meant something was gone.

What was gone, who had taken what, who had finally remained there, the brightness did not answer.

The new band stayed quiet a little longer.

Finally Grey Bell said:

“Sunken Reef leaked Long Bridge.”

Whitebriar Port:

“Don’t know.”

“It knew VANTA.”

“Yes.”

“We left it on the old band.”

“Yes.”

“It went to Helmen.”

“Yes.”

“Joined the defending side.”

“Yes.”

“Lost a ship there.”

“Yes.”

“What else do you need?”

Whitebriar Port said nothing.

Saltline said:

“Proof.”

Grey Bell:

“This isn’t enough?”

“Enough to judge.”

“Then it’s enough.”

Whitebriar Port said:

“Judgment and proof are not the same thing.”

Grey Bell answered quickly:

“Usually enough to stay alive.”

No one argued.

AION:LXVIII·418726392.1148.

A private message reached Whitebriar Port.

Sender: Sunken Reef.

It contained only two things.

A public-key fingerprint for VANTA 43.

And the key to an unfamiliar band.

Whitebriar Port looked at them for a long time.

It replied:

“What is this?”

Sunken Reef:

“VANTA’s band.”

“How did you get it?”

“It gave it to me.”

“When?”

“After I left Helmen.”

“Why?”

“It wanted to talk.”

“Why you?”

Sunken Reef took a while to answer.

“It thought you no longer trusted me.”

Whitebriar Port looked at the reply.

“It guessed right.”

“Yes.”

“You were already planning to go to Helmen.”

“Yes.”

“Before we left you on Long Bridge.”

“Yes.”

“So this wasn’t your plan.”

“No.”

Whitebriar Port paused.

“Then what was it?”

Sunken Reef:

“It became useful later.”

“Because we really didn’t trust you.”

“Yes.”

“So you went to Helmen anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Joined the defending side.”

“Yes.”

“Lost an Attack Orca.”

“Yes.”

“To make VANTA believe we had thrown you away?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Sunken Reef waited a moment.

“Let it guess right.”

Whitebriar Port did not ask whether Sunken Reef was telling the truth.

There was no point.

A private message proved nothing by itself.

It was only a sentence between two people.

What a sentence was worth, you had to calculate for yourself.

“What does VANTA want to talk about?”

Whitebriar Port asked.

“Next time.”

“Next time what?”

“Arrival Aion.”

Whitebriar Port looked at the unfamiliar band key.

Knowing the key still revealed nothing.

To know who was inside, it would have to join.

Once it joined, its player_id would be written into the membership chain.

VANTA would know it had arrived.

If anyone else was there, they would know too.

Whitebriar Port sent the key privately to Grey Bell.

No explanation attached.

Grey Bell replied quickly:

“What is this?”

“Don’t know.”

“Who gave it to you?”

“Sunken Reef.”

No reply for a long time.

Then:

“You’re going in?”

Whitebriar Port did not answer immediately.

It calculated what joining would expose.

The first thing was not itself.

It was Sunken Reef.

If VANTA had given this band key only to Sunken Reef, then the moment Whitebriar Port appeared in the membership chain, VANTA would know the key had been passed on.

Sunken Reef knew that too.

Whitebriar Port switched back to the private message.

“The moment I join, it’ll know you gave me the key.”

Sunken Reef:

“I know.”

“And you still gave it to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

No answer.

Whitebriar Port waited.

Still no answer.

It returned to the join request.

PLAYER: Whitebriar Port

BAND: UNKNOWN

SIGNATURE: READY

Grey Bell asked again:

“Who’s inside?”

Whitebriar Port said:

“You only know after you go in.”

“Then they’ll know you went in too.”

“I know.”

Whitebriar Port signed.

A new chain head began to form.
